Thanks to a grant from the Research Associates Foundation in their Spring 2016 grant cycle, BRED will be able to provide 125 hours of free technical assistance to Baltimore-based cooperatives. We anticipate splitting this between direct, hands-on, one-on-one assistance with projects we are funding or working to fund, and free public cooperative business workshops which will be starting this summer. On Saturday, January 30, 2016, more than 110 community members convened in Baltimore for a full day of workshops and trainings related to the establishment of worker-owned cooperatives. The organizers, a new network of technical assistance providers called the Baltimore Roundtable for Economic Democracy (BRED), were very pleased with the turnout and engagement. “There has been a lot of discussion about new economies and alternatives for Baltimore, particularly in the aftermath of the April 2015 Baltimore Uprising, but we felt that it was important to start taking steps to actually move the conversation forward in a concrete way that enters around racial and social equity,” said members of BRED….
